Biomass efficiencyWith the example wood increasing the potential of biomass for our mobility from the present beginnings to the time with large amounts of electricity from renewable energy.
An actual medium sized cars needs about 5 l Diesel for 100km. We reported 2005 in Güssing from an experiment to make 1 litre Diesel from 5 kg wood. So an actual car would need 25 kg wood for 100km.
A Plug-in Hybrid which drives 80% in electric only mode needs only for 20% longer travels outside the electric range fuel. At only 3,5 litre Diesel/100km for the range extender, the wood usage is reduced to 3,5 kg wood/100km.
At the current production method, wood provides the energy for the chemical reactions to produce the Diesel similar fuel. But it comes the time, where we have by far not enough biomass for this luxury, but electric power by solar energy more than enough. The wood is seen only as a carbon supplier. Hydrogen is produced by solar electric power and electrolysis. Methan or Methanol for the range extender. So the necessary wood is reduced to 0.8 kg/100km. The effort to make methan from wood is in the moment unknown, provisionally estimated with 8 to 12 kWh for this 0.8 kg wood. 0.8 kg wood and 20 to 24 kWh electric power for 100km. An optimization for the demand of biomass of 1:30. |
