The worldwide first monument for Garibaldi is a work of sculptor Galletti and was inaugurated in 1882. In 1849 Garibaldi with 2000 soldiers was on the run.

Pressed by the Austrian army granted San Marino Garibaldi protection. On the 31st July, 1849 Garibaldi dissolved the Roman legion.

Only 1/4 hour before papal and Austrian troops closed the siege ring around San Marino, Garibaldi escaped with 250 men
